My Secret Everyday Tips for Preventing Diaper Rash and Skin Irritation: It pains every mother’s heart to see her baby suffering from a diaper rash.

However, it’s not always easy to prevent diaper rashes. At first, when I had my twins, I had a hard time keeping up with all the needed diaper changes. As a result, I felt I was constantly treating their diaper rashes.

Babies have sensitive skin and their little bottoms are susceptible to a rash from the moisture and chemicals in urine and stools. With 5 kids, our family has certainly had its share of diaper rashes.

#1 Change Baby’s Diaper Frequently

This minimizes the time baby’s skin is in contact with urine and stools.

#2 Bathe Baby Everyday Or At Least Every Other Day

Washing the baby’s diaper area thoroughly with soap and water will help clean off any residue waste that might irritate the skin. Even water can be enough if the baby has sensitive skin.

#3 Air Out Baby’s Bottom

After a bath, I’ll put my babies naked in the crib with their bath towels folded in layers under their bottoms for about 10 minutes. 

After some time without their diaper, I really notice a decrease in redness in their diaper area. We’ve had a few accidents of course but it’s worth it!

#4 Apply a Diaper Cream Every Time You Change Your Baby

I love Burt Bee’s Diaper Ointment Diaper Rash Cream. I like its thick, white consistency that coats the baby’s bottom and acts as a natural barrier from moisture on his delicate skin.

This is great for all-natural, everyday prevention of diaper rash. It also has zinc oxide to help treat moderate rashes.

Another plus: it has no petroleum. Since our skin is our biggest organ, it’s important what we put on it.

Petroleum coats the skin like plastic wrap, clogging the pores and causing a build-up of toxins. This ointment doesn’t do this. It is my first line of defense in diaper rash prevention.

Whether you use disposable or cloth diapers, disposable baby wipes or cloth baby wipes, make sure the brand or detergent etc. you are using isn’t causing any additional irritation.

My 3rd son Caleb had a persistent diaper rash when he was about 1 year old. I tried a couple different remedies but nothing helped much.

Then, we switched the brand of disposable baby wipes we were using. Within a few days, his rash cleared right up. We had finally tracked down the culprit!

#7 Wash Your Hands After Every Diaper Change

This may sound like a no brainer but if you have other little ones you are also running after, it is easy to get distracted and forget.

If baby has a yeast diaper rash and mom breastfeeds shortly after without washing her hands, the yeast can easily spread to mom’s nipples and cause thrush

I had thrush with my third born after taking a round of antibiotics to combat mastitis. It’s no fun! So make sure to always wash your hands to prevent any transfer of germs!

(Taking antibiotics is not always necessary for treating mastitis. There are other more natural remedies that are equally if not more effective).
